what is somatic therapy
Soma means ‘body’ in ancient Greek, and Somatic is the felt experience of the body from the person’s point of view. When we get in contact with ourselves in this way, we unfold the innate wisdom that was always there. By integrating the body, the emotional states and the mind, we can access a greater capacity to be in connection with ourselves, others, and the environment, returning to a greater sense of ‘wholeness.’
To cope with day-to-day life, we often repress, hide, numb, ignore or detach from our feelings to move on. When we do allow ourselves to feel such emotions, we don’t know what to do with them as they may overwhelm us or make us feel ‘flooded’, so we push them to the side hoping they will disappear. These are valid and important adaptive mechanisms that help us function in life, but it also means that such unprocessed emotions are still within us affecting the way we view ourselves, live our lives and interact with others. We carry these unprocessed emotions into new relationships and situations.
These somatic therapy sessions take into consideration biological aspects like your nervous system, your adaptive mechanisms, self-regulation and co-regulation strategies to help you come back to balance and your natural ability to adapt.
Through somatic sessions, we create a safe and trusting environment where you can get in touch with such stuck emotions that are making us feel stressed or disconnected to process, transform, release and restore.
My Specializations
Somatic STRESS Release Sessions
These sessions focus on re-establishing our innate capacity to transform in the face of life challenges or stressors such as work, family situations, relationships, physical discomfort, life-transitional phases or trauma-related stress. They provide a space to process the specific stress that is present in your life from a somatic approach. These sessions focus on your specific needs and how you experience stress in your life, so you can release accumulated stress in a way that is unique to you.
Bio-psycho-social Strategies Sessions
These sessions aim to increase your sense of well-being and support you to achieve your specific goals. We look at how all the different aspects of your life (biological, psychological and social) are impacting you. We identify, plan and execute actions to reach your individual goals. Goals might involve emotional balance, career satisfaction, healthy relationships, and parenting skills.
I use some of these modalities to help achieve your goals:
Psycho-education
Cognitive-behavioral techniques
Skills training
Relaxation techniques
Interpersonal therapy techniques.
Somatic ATTACHMENT Sessions
Attachment is our biological and natural desire to bond with ourselves and others. These sessions support you in grounding yourself in a secure, trusting and stable relationship with yourself, others and the environment by addressing your current attachment style. The somatic aspect of this therapy aims at re-connecting and returning to secure attachment from an experiential and felt-sense approach which is different from understanding this process from a theoretical standpoint. For example, this is the difference between learning how to swim and the experience of swimming. Somatic attachment therapy sessions have been shown to benefit individuals, couples, as well as parents seeking to become securely attached.
Conscious Movement Events
This is an event that aligns your physical sense with your internal experience. Using sounds, lights, visuals, movement and reflection we embark together on an event of movement that reminds us and re-connects us with our innate joy, innocence, capacity to love, create and transform.
